How to Add a PDF Watermark to Selected, Odd, or Even Pages

A PDF watermark does not always belong on every page. You may need it on pages 2, 5, and 8, on odd pages only, or on even pages only. The important choice comes before opacity or rotation: select the correct page mode. PDF SealBox’s Watermark PDF tool provides Range, Odd, Even, and Exclude modes.

Clarify what “page number” means

Before adding a watermark, map the file in physical order. A cover may be physical page 1, a contents page may be page 2, and the body may begin on page 3. That sequence is only an example, so check your own file.

• Physical page order: the page’s position in the PDF. Range, Odd, and Even use this order.
• Printed page number: the number shown in a header or footer. The body may start at 1 even when the PDF’s physical page is 3.
• Chapter or attachment number: a label such as “Chapter 3, page 2” is not a direct selection rule. Convert it to a physical PDF page number first.

For example, if you want the first, third, and fifth body pages watermarked but the PDF begins with a cover and contents page, the physical targets may be 3, 5, and 7. Confirm the front matter before entering a range.

How to choose among the four page modes

Add a watermark to specific pages

When the targets are pages 2, 5, and 8, Range is the clearest option.

1. Open the Watermark PDF tool and choose the source PDF.
2. Choose Text or Image. Text watermarks can be entered directly; image watermarks use a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image.
3. Choose Range in the Pages section and enter `2,5,8`. Use `8-10` for a continuous range, or `2,5,8-10` for mixed input.
4. Check the displayed page count before styling the mark.
5. Adjust position, size, opacity, rotation, color, and layer order.
6. Refresh the generated PDF preview, inspect included and excluded pages, then download the result.

Watermark odd pages only

Odd selects physical pages 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on across the PDF. It can be useful for duplex documents, alternating-page review marks, or workflows tied to a fixed physical page order.

1. Upload the PDF and choose a text or image watermark.
2. Choose Odd in the Pages section.
3. Check the “Will apply to” count against the document length.
4. Preview physical pages 1 and 3, plus the last odd page.
5. Open the exported PDF and confirm that even pages were not marked by mistake.

If the cover is physical page 1 but you need odd pages within the body only, do not treat “body odd pages” as the tool’s Odd mode. Map the body pages to physical pages first, then use Range with values such as `3,5,7,9`.

Watermark even pages only

Even selects physical pages 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on. The difference from Odd is the page test, not the watermark’s opacity, position, or layer.

1. Upload the PDF and choose the watermark type.
2. Choose Even.
3. Check the number of pages selected. A ten-page PDF normally selects physical pages 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.
4. Preview pages 2 and 4, then check pages 1 and 3 for the absence of the mark.
5. Export and recheck the final PDF.

When most pages need a watermark, use Exclude

If only the cover, signature page, and attachment page should remain clean, Exclude is shorter than listing every included page. In a twelve-page PDF, enter `1,6,12` to leave those pages unmarked and process the rest.

The risk is an incomplete skip list. Every page you do not list will be included. If only a few pages should receive a watermark, Range is safer.

Set the watermark appearance without hiding content

• Position: Center or diagonal placement can make a status mark easy to spot, but move it away from tables, signatures, and dense text.
• Size: A status mark rarely needs to cover the page. Large image watermarks are more likely to cover charts and comments.
• Opacity: Higher transparency preserves readability but may make the mark less visible in print. Check the densest body page before choosing a value.
• Rotation: A diagonal mark spans more of the page and can cross headings or signatures. A horizontal mark is easier to keep inside a clear area.
• Layer: Over-content is more visible; behind-content interferes less with text. Confirm the mark remains visible after export.
• Image format: For a logo or seal, use a genuinely transparent image so a white rectangle is not placed on the page.

How to watermark odd or even pages inside a range

The current Odd and Even modes filter the entire PDF. They are not a combined “range plus odd/even” filter. To watermark odd physical pages from 3 through 10, use Range and enter `3,5,7,9`. For even pages in the same span, enter `4,6,8,10`.

For a short list, manual entry is easiest to review. For a long list, create a physical-page checklist first, paste it into Range, and sample the first, middle, and last included pages after export.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

• The watermark appears everywhere: Check whether the mode is still All, or whether Exclude was selected with the intended pages placed in the exclusion list.
• Odd and even pages seem reversed: Check physical PDF order. Inserting, deleting, or moving a cover changes the parity of later pages.
• The count for `2-5` is unexpected: Use a standard hyphen and remove section titles or other symbols from the input.
• Printed body labels do not match the marked pages: Map printed labels to physical PDF pages before choosing Odd, Even, or Range.
• The mark covers a table or signature: Move it, reduce its size, or lower opacity, then check the densest page rather than an empty sample.
• The preview looks right but the download does not: Refresh the generated PDF preview before downloading, then open the exported file in another reader.
• An image watermark has a white box: Check whether the source image has a real alpha channel instead of only appearing transparent in a viewer.

Can I watermark only pages 2, 5, and 8?

Yes. Choose Range, enter `2,5,8`, and verify the count and preview.

Do Odd and Even use printed page numbers?

No. The current Watermark PDF workflow uses physical PDF page order. Custom labels or printed chapter numbers do not change the Odd or Even test.

Can I watermark odd pages from physical page 3 to page 10?

Yes. Use Range and enter `3,5,7,9`. The current Odd mode itself filters odd physical pages across the whole PDF.

How do I leave the cover unmarked?

If only the cover should be skipped, choose Exclude and enter `1`. If only a few body pages should be marked, use Range with the exact target pages.

Does PDF SealBox upload my PDF?
