PAGE NUMBERS / STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Make long PDFs easier to navigate.
Add language-aware page numbers locally with presets or a custom template. You control the range, position, typography and starting number before exporting a new PDF.
REAL SCREENSHOTS / WORKFLOW EVIDENCE
Use the real workspace, step by step.
Templates, position, page range and numbered preview are captured from the live local tool. Start with the workspace controls, then verify the loaded result before exporting.

Keep the source file, set the task, then review representative pages after export before relying on the result.
01 / THE WORKFLOW
Complete one careful run in four steps.
- 01
Choose the PDF
Select a local PDF and wait for its page count and preview to appear.
- 02
Choose a template
Start with an English or Chinese preset, or write a custom template using page and total-page tokens.
- 03
Set range and appearance
Choose all, odd, even, a range or exclusions, then select position, margins, font and size.
- 04
Review and export
Inspect pages with dense footers and different orientations, then download the numbered copy.
02 / KEY CONTROLS
Know what each setting changes.
Template
Presets help you start quickly; custom text lets you match a house style while keeping the page token visible.
Page range
Use a range such as 1,3,5-8 when front matter or appendices should stay unnumbered.
Position and type
Keep the number away from the trim edge and choose a readable font size with enough contrast.
03 / CONFIGURATION REFERENCE
Read the configuration as a working spec.
Do not memorize labels in isolation. Check what each control changes, then read its defaults, dependencies and practical starting point.
CONTROL
Template mode
- Purpose and impact
- Chooses a ready-made label or custom text for every page.
- Default / valid options
- Preset (default) or Custom; custom accepts {page} and {pages}, up to 100 characters.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- A PDF must be loaded. In Custom mode, {page} and {pages} are the only dynamic tokens; text without them is displayed literally.
- Recommendation and use case
- Use a preset first; choose “Page {page} of {pages}” when total-page context matters.
CONTROL
Number style and start
- Purpose and impact
- Controls the numbering system and first value.
- Default / valid options
- Arabic, lower Roman or upper Roman; start number 1-999999, default 1.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- Start number must be positive; Roman styles suit intentional front matter.
- Recommendation and use case
- Use Arabic from 1 for normal reports; reserve Roman numerals for a documented convention.
CONTROL
Minimum digits
- Purpose and impact
- Adds leading zeroes for consistent number width.
- Default / valid options
- 1-4 digits; default 1; Arabic only.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- Only available with Arabic numbering.
- Recommendation and use case
- Use 2 digits for short batches and 3 for large archives; keep 1 for ordinary reports.
CONTROL
Position
- Purpose and impact
- Places the number in a conventional header or footer location.
- Default / valid options
- Six positions: top/bottom × left/center/right; default bottom center.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- Render the PDF before checking headers, footers and margins.
- Recommendation and use case
- Bottom center is the safest default; use a corner when the footer already has content.
CONTROL
Page range
- Purpose and impact
- Limits numbering to pages that should receive numbers.
- Default / valid options
- All (default), range, odd, even, selected or exclude.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- The PDF must be loaded; range/list values are constrained by page count.
- Recommendation and use case
- Use All for a simple report; exclude a cover or use a range for appendices.
CONTROL
Font and size
- Purpose and impact
- Controls typeface and readability.
- Default / valid options
- Sans, serif or monospace; 6-72 pt, default 12 pt; optional bold/italic.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- The size must fit the page margins and template text.
- Recommendation and use case
- Start at 11-12 pt sans-serif; increase for print only after checking small pages.
CONTROL
Opacity and colour
- Purpose and impact
- Sets contrast while keeping the number secondary.
- Default / valid options
- Opacity 10%-100%, default 80%; any six-digit colour.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- Choose enough contrast against the page background.
- Recommendation and use case
- Use a dark neutral at 70%-90%; avoid low contrast on scans.
CONTROL
Edge margins
- Purpose and impact
- Sets distance from the page edge.
- Default / valid options
- 0-200 pt for each axis; default 24 pt.
- Prerequisite / dependency
- The position must be selected and margins should clear existing footer text.
- Recommendation and use case
- Start at 24 pt; increase for trim, binding or existing footer content.
04 / EXPORT CHECKS
Confirm these three things before delivery.
- Page numbers are visual text added to a new PDF; they do not change the source file.
- Review the first, last and rotated pages before sending the result.
- A page number does not prove document authenticity or signing authority.
Open the tool, choose a file and start from the preview.
